TEXAS (AP) Mexico has won its first World Cup since 2006 by beating Colombia 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying match Saturday.
Mexico was the only major-power team eliminated from the tournament for failing to qualify, while Colombia, the first team eliminated in the group stage, has reached the knockout stage for the first time.
The winner of the match will host the 2019 World Cup in Russia, while the loser will face the 2019 FIFA World Cup host country.
Mexico will be in charge of its home country, where it won the 2014 World Cup.
Colombia’s victory was its first in its homeland.
The Mexicans had to overcome an 11-goal deficit in the opening minutes and then put it away with a penalty shootout that was won by Colombia’s Pablo Vazquez.
Mexico, which had lost seven of its previous eight matches, looked like it might slip out of the group.
But it kept pressing and was finally able to score.
It looked like a rout when it finally scored the equalizer after 33 minutes.
Vazqoy struck a low cross to the near post for a penalty that gave Colombia a 2-1 lead.
The Colombian defense held the Mexicans to a shot-clock advantage for much of the first half, but the visitors were unable to capitalize on it.
Afterwards, Colombian goalkeeper Manuel Vazque was booed as he tried to play the ball past the Mexican goal, but it fell for a corner that was deflected into the net.
Vazquez made it 2-2 with a header in the 59th minute.
Colombia was looking for a goal but was unable to find it.
Colombia will be favored to advance to the knockout stages for the second time in the tournament, having beaten Ecuador in the quarterfinals.
